How support changes the way we experience challenge
How steep is your Mountain?
Sometimes the challenge isn’t the mountain itself — it’s believing we have to climb it alone.
I recently revisited a podcast featuring renowned author and positive psychology expert Shawn Achor, and something he shared really stuck with me: if you’re standing at the base of a mountain and believe you’re climbing it alone, your brain will perceive the mountain to be 10–20% steeper than it really is. But if someone is standing beside you, the climb appears less daunting — not just emotionally, but physiologically.

The perception of challenge
This isn’t just a metaphor. The science shows that whether we’re facing a physical challenge, a period of depression, or a tough career decision, we experience it as significantly more difficult if we feel unsupported. Our perception of challenge is shaped by our sense of connection.
When we share what we’re facing with someone else — a friend, colleague, coach, or mentor — we don’t just feel lighter. The mountain itself appears less steep.
Why support shifts our reality
For many of us with big aspirations, this message resonates deeply. Saying yes to hard things is part of growth. But when we hold it all on our own, the climb can feel overwhelming.
Sharing what we’re going through with someone we trust can transform how we experience the challenge. It creates space for perspective. For possibility. For new paths forward.
My personal take
Opening up isn’t always easy. I’m fiercely independent and often hold myself to unrealistic expectations. So inviting people in — letting them see the climb — is something I have to consciously practise.
But I’m working on it, because I know I need to.
I’m working on finding my tribe — the people who will walk beside me, and sometimes behind me, helping me reach my summit.
And in return, I’ll strap on my boots and help them reach theirs.
Who’s walking beside you?
When has a challenge felt less steep because someone walked beside you?
If this resonates, I invite you to share it with someone who’s helped you on your journey. Or get in touch if you’re exploring how to build more support into your team’s everyday reality.
At Trace Consulting, I work with leaders and teams to create the kinds of cultures where the climb doesn’t feel so steep — because no one is climbing alone.
